Hoo-ha over Hungary's Gay Olympics

Budapest's mayor has spoken out against the so-called “Gay Olympics”, which is set to be held in the Hungarian capital next June.

“I disassociate myself from both the lifestyle and the event,” Istvan Tarlos affirmed in a statement concerning the EuroGames.

The tournament, which is organised by the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation, will celebrate its 13th edition in 2012, with the event billed as “the biggest athletic event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Europe.”

However, Budapest's mayor will not be cheering on the contestants next summer.

Besides being against what he descibed as the gay “lifestyle,” Tarlos also suggested that the event was “discriminatory”, as only “such people” can participate.

However, it appears that Mr Tarlos may have overlooked the event's stipulations, as the official EuroGames website states that it is “open to anyone who wants to participate, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual preference etc.”

The EuroGames begins on 27 June and runs until 1 July.
