Are Budapest Art Cinemas Facing Closure?
A decreasing state support, increasing operational costs and - yes! - falling number of viewers may lead to closing several art cinemas in Budapest. Although a plea for financial help was sent to the Budapest Mayor's Office, three or four art cinemas are in face of closure in 2009.
Where will the viewers get a chance to watch the best off and European movies? We're afraid that they'll have to make do with huge multiplex cinemas.
Hungary's Motion Picture Public Foundation granted the support of about 60 million forints (EUR 210,000) to 13 art cinemas in Budapest last year, which covered up only 10 percent of operational costs.
