We are opening: Posters during Socialism

Snazzy socialist advertising?! Yes such a thing (apparently) did exist - at least in Hungary and this new exhibition at the MKVM (Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism) aims to set the record straight that it wasn't just hunger pains that lured shoppers into stores but also snappy jingles and eye-catching poster designs. Tons of posters from the sixties, seventies and eighties are on display here along with designs of shop fronts and typical displays of products recreating the atmosphere of an every day Hungarian high street of yesteryear. Expect vinegar to feature heavily in those displays though!

Christmas Market

Budapest's Christmas market is in Vörösmarty Square and is the place to be this winter to snap up that unique Hungarian special something. Stalls will be selling typical Hungarian crafted goods included leather goods, glass, ceramics, wooden toys, furs, rugs, fabrics, hand-blown glass figures, wrought-iron goods, candles, bags. If you're feeling peckish then make a bee-line for one of the grill stalls where you can munch your way through Töki pompos, a Hungarian bread dough baked in a clay oven and Kürtőskalács”, a traditional hollow, cylinder-shaped pastry. Daily entertainment is on-hand from Hungarian folk bands, puppet shows, gingerbread cookery demonstrations and, of course, old St.Nicholas. Magic.
